Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC) Chairperson Sudhir Kandolkar stated that the municipal council has requested the State government to set up a plant by which plastic can be converted into furnace oil.
A Chennai-based company had made a presentation in the council a couple of months ago showing how plastic can be converted into furnace oil. Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar and Environment Minister Alina Saldhana were there during the presentation.
“This plant does not require much land and MMC engineers have visited the plant in Chennai and got acquainted with its functioning. If the State government provides financial assistance to MMC to set up the plant, then the problem of plastic waste in Bardez taluka will be solved,” added Kandolkar.
“Presently, MMC collects garbage on door-to-door basis and after segregating plastic from it, sells it to private parties,” informed Kandolkar.
“We have also imposed ban on the business community for delivering goods in plastic bags of less than 40 microns to their customers. MMC will do its best to curtail the use of plastic in its area,” added Kandolkar.
